Who it is for

Device OEMs, edge platform teams, and privacy-constrained verticals that cannot route agent workloads through hosted APIs.

Why now

The convergence is now cross-vendor and cross-layer rather than one vendor's roadmap: Apple announced a 2nm part plus a quad-die SoC with 512GB unified memory and ~1.2TB/s bandwidth; NVIDIA reports compact 2026 reasoners running on Jetson AGX Thor/Orin with NVFP4 and speculative decoding; CUDA 13.4 adds Windows on Arm support and decouples driver packaging from the SDK; a 2.7-bit VLM quantization keeps 8-bit activations for Arm CPUs; and a 150M model chose bounded-memory convolutions so cache size stops scaling with conversation length. A year ago local agents were demos; now each layer publishes a target-specific deployment path.

What would kill it

Shipping hardware fails to meet the claimed unified-memory bandwidth, or quantized open models lose enough agentic capability that local deployments cannot finish real workflows and remain demos on all but the largest SKUs.
