NeoMME introduces 260M and 800M multilingual multimodal encoders that abandon the usual VLM-derived recipe for visual document retrieval. One bidirectional Transformer consumes text tokens and raw 32x32 image patches; no separate pretrained vision tower, text encoder, or causal language model is used, and the whole model is trained from scratch with a masked discrete-diffusion objective.1

Context

ModernBERT brought efficiency to bidirectional text encoders, and ModernVBERT extended it to documents but still relied on a separate SigLIP2 vision tower. NeoMME is explicitly designed to eliminate that remainder: image patches and text tokens enter the same Transformer, share the same computational path, and both variants have a 16,384-token bidirectional context. Pretraining is from scratch and mixes text, code, mathematics, natural images, and document images, with about 290B text-only tokens in a total budget of about 524B packed input tokens.1

Assessment

Fine-tuned using ColPali's page-image setup, NeoMME-Retriever takes document page screenshots directly and therefore bypasses OCR preprocessing. On ViDoRe v3 it reports nDCG@10 = 0.523 for the 260M model, the highest score in the table for a model below 800M parameters and within roughly 0.002 of the 3.75B ColQwen2.5, and 0.556 for the 800M model. A single forward pass returns both a dense head and a late-interaction head, so corpus index and rerank can be built from one model.1

Two quantitative efficiency claims stand out. At matched 2048x2048 input on one NVIDIA L40S, the 260M retriever encodes about 51 document pages per second, roughly twice the 26 pages/s reported for ColModernVBERT. On ViDoRe v3, a combination of hierarchical token pooling and asymmetric quantization reduces the average late-interaction index from about 1.5 MB to 6 kB per page, a roughly 255x reduction, while preserving more than 95% of baseline nDCG@10.1

Caveats

Because this is a single self-reported release, the strongest claims need external confirmation. The table's daggered comparison scores come from MTEB and its own scores from the authors' evaluation, so there is no independent third-party run. The prose statement that both sizes lie on the ViDoRe v3 Pareto frontier is also not strictly supported by the table: Vultron Flash at 850M reaches 0.565 nDCG@10, higher than the 800M model's 0.556 with only 50M more parameters. The assessment would change if independent MTEB-style evaluations, comparisons against other from-scratch native multimodal encoders, or ablations separating the diffusion objective from the architecture contradicted or confirmed these numbers.1
